How It Works

Solar charges the battery during the day. During peak tariff hours or overnight, the battery powers your home — eliminating grid import and maximising the value of every kWh you generate.

Heat-Up Times

From cold (15°C inlet → 60°C). Mixergy heats top-down — usable hot water appears at 10% charge, hours before a conventional bottom-up cylinder would deliver anything.

⚡ Solar divert runs the 3 kW element on free surplus PV — same heat times, zero energy cost.

Smart Features

  • Top-down stratification — shower-ready in minutes, not hours
  • Solar PV surplus divert — free hot water when battery is full
  • Time-of-use tariff learning (Octopus Agile, Economy 7 etc.)
  • Legionella protection — automated 65°C weekly pasteurisation cycle
  • Remote monitoring & schedule control via Mixergy app
  • Open API — Loxone reads tank charge % for demand-response scheduling
  • G3 unvented — mains pressure to every outlet

Solar Divert Integration

When the Sunsynk inverter battery reaches 100% SOC, a dry-contact relay triggers Mixergy's solar boost — diverting surplus PV to heat water instead of exporting at a low feed-in rate.

Local processing — no cloud dependency
The Loxone system acts as the brain of the building — coordinating heating zones, lighting, blinds, ventilation and security into a single intelligent platform. The Miniserver processes rules and schedules locally (no cloud dependency) with optional remote access via the Loxone app. Heating control integrates directly with the PowerBoard panels via Tree-bus thermostats, enabling per-room scheduling and occupancy-based control.

How Loxone Saves You Money

Four distinct mechanisms — each one cuts running cost in a different way
👁️
Heats only occupied rooms
Room Comfort Sensors and flush-mounted presence sensors detect when rooms are empty. After 30 minutes without motion the heating setpoint drops automatically to a 16°C setback temperature. In an HMO where tenants are out during the day, presence-based setback alone cuts heating energy by 15–25% versus a fixed thermostat schedule.
☀️
Sends free solar to the right rooms first
Loxone reads the Sunsynk inverter output in real time and prioritises solar generation to whichever zones are occupied. Empty rooms stay in setback. Occupied rooms heat for free during daylight. Without this coordination, solar power is shared evenly regardless of who's home.
💧
Avoids wasting solar on a full hot water tank
Loxone reads tank charge percentage from the Mixergy cylinders via API. When the battery is full and the cylinders are already at high charge, it redirects surplus solar to occupied heating zones instead of dumping it into already-hot water. Every diverted kWh saves ~33c instead of earning ~14c on export.
🌙
Shifts loads to the 14c overnight rate
On a Night Saver / TOU tariff, Loxone schedules battery charging, heating pre-warm, and hot water boost cycles to run during the ~14c/kWh overnight window rather than the ~33c daytime peak. This is the mechanism behind the tariff-switching saving shown on the Savings tab.
direct demand reduction (presence setback)
enables TOU tariff bonus
enables higher solar self-consumption
enables predictive battery scheduling
enables hot water smart divert
TOTAL Loxone-attributable / yr · payback
Loxone doesn't generate or store energy. It's the orchestration layer that makes every other system perform at its best. The breakdown above attributes the saving each system would lose without Loxone scheduling it: presence-based setback, off-peak load-shifting, real-time solar diversion, predictive battery cycling and coordinated hot-water boost. The total is Loxone's contribution across the whole proposal, not just the 20% direct demand reduction line.

Assumptions: electricity tariff from wizard settings. Infrared duty cycle 40% (thermostatically controlled). Solar self-consumption 70%. Battery adds 10% additional self-consumption.

How Your Costs Compare Over Time

Energy prices rise every year. Solar generation and battery storage don't — once installed, they're effectively fixed-cost. Below: projected annual energy bill at 5%/yr inflation, with and without the proposed PoweRad system.
Milestone Without PoweRad (rising) With PoweRad Annual Saving Cumulative to Date
Set the Current Annual Bill in Project Details to project future savings
Inflation rate of 5%/yr applied to both baseline and the PoweRad system (industry-standard assumption per SEAI / OFGEM long-term averages). In practice, fossil-fuel heating typically inflates faster than electricity, so the saving is likely to be larger still. See the Savings tab for the full year-by-year 15-year projection including maintenance and inverter service.

Why EPC / BER Rating Matters

Commercial, regulatory and financial implications of the rating uplift
  • UK rental law: Properties must achieve EPC E minimum now; C by 2030 (proposed). Non-compliance = fines up to £30,000.
  • Ireland rental law: New tenancies must achieve BER D1 from Nov 2025; B2 for new leases from 2028 (SEAI).
  • Resale value: Each band improvement adds ~2–5% to market value (RICS / Savills data).
  • Green mortgages: A/B-rated properties qualify for 0.1–0.3% rate reductions with major lenders.
  • Note: Figures are indicative. Exact EPC/BER requires a certified assessor (DEA/BER assessor).

Projections assume 5% annual energy price escalation, 70% solar self-consumption (battery-dependent), and €300/yr routine maintenance. Year 12 includes a €1,000 inverter service allowance (shown as €1,300 in the running costs column for that year). How Fabric Affects System Sizing

The PBS-250W infrared panel system is sized based on floor area and building heat loss. Infrared panels heat occupants and surfaces directly — not the air — so sizing is typically 60–80% of equivalent convective requirements. Improved wall/roof insulation reduces the panel count needed and improves running costs further.
